Accessibility statement

What we are aiming for

We want every part of this website to be usable by everyone, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, need larger text or cannot use a mouse. Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.1, at level AA.

What we have done

  • Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a skip link to the main content.
  • Every color pairing on the site has been measured against the WCAG contrast formula and meets level AA or better.
  • Headings run in order, each page has one main heading, and page regions are marked up so a screen reader can jump between them.
  • Images carry descriptive alternative text, and the diagrams carry a written description of what they show.
  • Text reflows without a horizontal scrollbar down to a 360 pixel screen, and can be enlarged in the browser without breaking the layout. Every page is checked at 360, 390 and 768 pixels.
  • Form fields have real labels, not placeholder text pretending to be labels.
  • There is no animation that moves on its own, no carousel and nothing that flashes.

How it was tested

Every page was checked with axe-core against the WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 rule sets at both desktop and phone widths, most recently on September 13, 2026, and returned no violations. We re-run it whenever we change a page. Every text and background pair that the pages actually render was measured for contrast and every one meets AA. Automated testing catches perhaps a third of real problems, so the pages were also checked by hand for keyboard order, focus visibility, heading structure and the quality of the alternative text. We have not yet commissioned a formal third-party audit or testing with users of assistive technology, and we will say so here until we have.

Known limitations

Two diagrams on this site are wider than a phone screen and scroll sideways inside their own boxes: the containment diagram on the your-data page and the monthly scorecard on the guarantee page. Each says so underneath it on a small screen, each carries a full written description for anyone who cannot use it visually, and nothing on either appears only there. The timeline of a claim on the home page and the data-flow diagram on the how-it-works page are built as ordinary text on a small screen, so they need no sideways scrolling at all.

The photographs

Four photographs appear on this site: stacks of paper claim files on the home page, an empty dental treatment room on the how-it-works page, the Boston skyline on the about page, and a portrait of our Chief Executive Officer on the about and contact pages. Each carries alternative text describing what it shows, and no information appears only in a photograph. None of them shows a Beacon client or anybody’s patient, and none is presented as if it did. The three scene photographs are in the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero dedication, and the provenance of each is recorded in the project file. The portrait is our own. One third-party equipment trade mark visible in the treatment-room photograph has been blurred out.

The two documents you can download, the security overview and the sample scorecard, are ordinary untagged PDFs. They mostly summarize pages that already exist on this site in accessible HTML, though a few items appear only in the PDFs. If you would find either easier to read in another format, ask us and we will send it.
